Croatia why go

Because it was part of Yugoslavia until , the country has stayed off the beaten path for many travelers, making it an often over-looked vacation option. The number one reason to go to Croatia has to be the beaches. Located only two hours from the city of Zagreb, this national park is arguably one of the most beautiful in the world.

Coffee lovers, take note: Zagreb should be on the top of your bucket list when it comes to delicious brews. Did we mention this place was affordable? While flights to the country can be as expensive as any other in Europe, travel, accommodation, food, and activities within the country are surprisingly cheap thanks to the favorable exchange rate.

Croatian food is both unique and familiar at the same time, making it a foodie paradise. Some of the best dishes are fresh, handmade pasta called fuzi covered in white truffles and butter in Istria, black seafood risotto along the coast, and many other Mediterranean-style foods.

And with its long, seafaring history, there's plenty to see: underwater wrecks of wine and olive oil cargo ships dating back thousands of years, right up to recent war ships. There are also some novel diving experiences like the Te Vega Sea Lake, reached by an underwater tunnel, the Blue Cave, even a reef with yellow coral. The coast of Dalmatia is a sailor's paradise! The best way to enjoy the dramatic cliffs rising from dark blue waters, countless scattered islands, hidden coves, untouched coastline, and seaside towns, is from the water.

You can rent a sailing boat with or without crew, or charter a yacht or catamaran to take you to remote coastal towns where you can enjoy fresh seafood and local wine in restaurants, or to an isolated beach.

Or just drop anchor and soak in the Adriatic atmosphere. This is Croatia's most popular national park and, many claim, Europe's most breathtaking natural wonder. Sixteen electric blue Plitvice Lakes inhabit a forested canyon, interconnected by stunning waterfalls, and easy-to-hike boardwalks and trails.

A panoramic shuttle bus allows the less active traveler to take in the breathtaking scenery, and more active travelers will thrill at the views from the trails or rowing across the waters. They call it the "Pearl of the Adriatic". The walled, seaside Dubrovnik seems to have it all: centuries-old forts surrounding an enormous, picturesque Old Town, scenic wall walks with dazzling views of the cliffs and sea, as well as its famous collection of baroque buildings on marble streets.

Dubrovnik is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and the iconic view is at the top of a cable car ride to the peak of Mount Srd.

With plenty of dips into the aforementioned crystal clear waters along the way, of course. If these are the usual countries you go on holiday to, why not consider Croatia? Most people say Croatia is on par with them, but a bit cheaper. Some people might expect bargain basement prices, but the country is — unfortunately — not quite at that level any more. You may have heard of the wonderful Plitvice Lakes National Park which — if you get the opportunity — is definitely a must-see.

As well as some wonderful restaurants all over the country including five Michelin-starred options — such as Restaurant in Dubrovnik and Pelegrini in Sibenik , you can sample many wonderful dishes in the country, particularly seafood offerings, pasta or traditional meat options such as peka or pasticada.

Istria in particular is known for being something of a foodie destination, and also has plenty of wineries for wine tastings as does the Peljesac Peninsula. Hvar, Split, Dubrovnik and Pula are all just two-and-a-half hours away or less!! I mean, need we say more? Croatia is famed for its scenic pebbled beaches, which are beautifully lapped by crystal clear water. One of the most well known is Zlatni Rat, also referred to as the Golden Cape, given that the tip of the beach is ever changing its shape thanks to the elements of wind and water.

This beach is a hidden gem and only reachable by boat! Fans of the show will need no convincing! It just depends on how much you want to spend, and personal preference — but the latter does sound much more entertaining. Croatia is the music mecca that has quickly become a firm favourite with festival goers. Most take place on the beach or somewhere secluded, so get ready to dance until you drop. Engrained since day dot, the Ancient Greeks grew wine on the islands of Dalmatia which has since been a great service to Croatians.
